First signs of chronic diseases (obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, indigestion) can be noticed at youth. Knowledge about healthy dining strongly influences on development of healthy habits and decrease of appearance of dangerous diseases related to dining.
 
Energy drinks are the most popular unhealthy product for youth and adults. Main consumers of energy drinks are male working people and students (28.6%) aged from 17 till 24 years old (30%). Mostly the consumers of energy drinks are also students, sportsmen and drivers. Tonus boosting drinks are being actively promoted at disco bars and night clubs. Producers promise that the one will get an excellent mood, be full of energy, has high work efficiency and other positive things. However, is it really so as described?
 
Composition of energy drinks is practically the same everywhere. It contains a lot of sugar – high energy component for sweetening of drinks, the excess of which is harmful for the organism and can lead to the development of such diseases as diabetes and obesity. Dentists state that large amount of the sugar leads to tooth decay.
 
Practically all energy drinks contain caffeine. It decreases the feeling of being tired and sleepy, increases the mental capacity, speeds up the pulse, boosts the arterial pressure, has a light diuretic effect. Constant drink of caffeine leads to the drug abuse – caffeinism. It shows itself in excitement, insomnia, nervousness, irritation, convulsions, stomach ache, heartthrob, and if to take in the large amount – mental affection, muscles injury, arrhythmia, and death (lethal dose for a person is 10-15g of caffeine, or 100-150 coffee cups).
 
Energy drinks contain glucuronolactone and taurine. It is amino acid, which is accumulated in muscle tissues. Daily a person while eating the food receives 200-300 mg of taurine. It is considered that it improves the work of the heart muscle. However, lately some medical professionals think that taurine does not influence on human body at all. Energy drinks contain several times more of taurine that in other products, and amount of glucuronolactone contained in 2 cans can excess 500 time of the daily dose of it. It is not known even for scientists how those two components work in those doses in our body. It is also unbeliaveble how they react together with caffeine. Therefore, experts of Scientific Food committee of European Union officially state that safety of usage of taurine and glucuronolactone is not determined, and further studies are required.
 
Theobromine – is the compound that’s effect and structure with caffeine, but which have 10 times less psychological effect. It is contained in cocoa and cocoa products, i.e. in a chocolate.
 
Most energy drinks contain a lot of vitamin of B group which are necessary for normal work of nervous system and brain, in particular. The excess is able to entail heartthrob, hands and legs shiver. Vitamins contained in energy drinks cannot replace multivitamin complex.
 
Guarana and ginseng – natural stimulants of various effect. Usual dose reduce the feeling of being tired, stimulates the mental and physical activity. The excessive amount of it can lead to anxiety, insomnia, and rise of arterial pressure.
 
Energy drinks might also contain Inose. Inose is one of the types of spirit which does not add the energy, but substantially affects the liver. One more component – D-ribose (carbohydrate which is necessary for synthesis of ATF – which is energy active molecule of body cell) – stimulates delivery of oxygen to the cells, crates the energy storage of ATF, which recovers the heart muscle and skeletal muscles after stress. Excess of energy molecules can lead to the muscles pain.
 
Energy drinks also have aromatics, colorants, PH control agents, which if to constantly be injected to the body will lead to the GIT diseases, food allergy, decrease in immunity, etc.
 
Sport drinks and isotones are rich with salt-electrolyte. Isotones’ function is to support the water-salt balance. Such drinks increase work efficiency, fill in the working muscles with energy and compensate the loss of liquid while physical exercises. But it is important to remember that caffeine is a good diuretic. It means the drink cannot be taken after physical exercise, during which we lose the water.
 
It is prohibited to mix energy drinks with alcohol (as it is frequently being done by night club visitors). Caffeine raises the blood pressure, and together with alcohol its effect is being multiplied for many times which might lead to hypertonic crisis. 
 
If you still decide to have energy drinks, please consider recommendations on how to drink it:
  • Do not exceed a daily dose of caffeine – it is about two cans of average energy drink. To drink more will bring harm to your health: body resources are already exhausted, and instead of desired effect you will feel the opposite.
  • After drinking give your organism to rest for a while to restore the resources.
  • Do not drink after doing sports – both makes pressure raise.
  • Energy drinks are strictly prohibited to pregnant, children and youngsters, elderly persons, having hypertonia, cardiovascular diseases, glaucoma, insomnia, nervousness, hyperestethia to the caffeine.
  • Caffeine comes out of body after 3-5 hours, and it is only half of it. Therefore, to mix other energy drinks and caffeine containing drinks (coffee, tea) during this period is not allowed – you can exceed the dose.
  • Many drinks are high in calories. If you have energy drinks in gym, drink it only before training. If you plan only to recover your strength, and do not plan to lose weight, you can have them before and after sports.
  • Do not mix energy drinks with alcohol as it is frequently done by night club visitors. Caffeine and alcohol are antipodes. Caffeine braces up, and alcohol makes you relax. Plus caffeine increases the alcohol’s effect to the brain. Caffeine raises the pressure, and together with alcohol its effect strengthens for many times. As a result the person can easily get the hypertonic crisis.
It is incorrect to think that energy drinks bring energy. The contents of the energy drink’s can as a key opens the door to the inner reserves of the body. In other words – the drink does not give energy, it consumes it out of you. The man uses its own resources, or basically lends it from himself. However, such loan or debt shall at some point be given back, by having tiredness, insomnia, irritation and depression.
